Clemson basketball coach Brad Brownell met with the media Saturday afternoon prior to the football team’s spring game and for the first part of his opening statement, he sounded like a coach on the hot seat.
Instead of talking about on-court accomplishments, Brownell focused on his players’ academics, off the court behaviour and his work in helping make the renovation of Littlejohn Coliseum possible, things coaches talk about when a season doesn’t turn out as expected.
When he did get to the season, Brownell pointed out a strength of schedule of 27, a RPI of 68, 4 wins over top 50 teams and 8 wins over top 100 teams.
Brownell said that data shows his team compared favorably with the last 8 teams to get into the NCAA Tournament. He felt his team was 2 wins short of making the tournament and just couldn’t close out enough close games.
Brownell also shared a couple of pieces of news…he has fired associated head coach Mike Winecki who had been with him his entire time at Clemson, and reserve guard Ty Hudson is transferring. Also, guard Shelton Mitchell will have arthroscopic knee surgery next week and be out 4-6 weeks.
