The USC women got all they wanted and then some from Arizona State in their second round NCAA Tournament battle at Colonial Life Arena Sunday night. The Gamecocks trailed for a most of the third quarter, but went on a run early in the fourth that pushed them out front by 10. That lead looked like it would be enough to carry them to a win but an 11-0 run by the Sun Devils made things scary for the 8,000 plus Gamecock fans in the arena. USC found a way to close it out and send those fans home happy and punch a ticket to the Sweet 16 for the fourth straight year.
After the game Dawn Staley said she wasn’t surprised they were pushed to the brink by ASU. She expected the Sun Devils to give them a game and viewed them as a team that was much better than their number eight seed. The Gamecocks may still be adjusting to the new four guard starting lineup with senior Alaina Coates out of the tournament with an ankle injury.
Now the Gamecocks can catch their breath, pack their bags for Stockton, California and get ready for the Sweet 16 next weekend.
