USC stayed perfect in SEC play with 57-53 win over Florida Wednesday night. That makes the Gamecocks 15-3 overall and 5-0 in league play. Here are my three takeaways from the Gamecocks take down of the Gators:
No pictures on the scorecard
Just like when I bounce my golf shot off the cart path, into a tree and ricochet it onto the green for a tap in birdie, it still counts the same as if I stroked it there with a a perfect seven iron. It doesn’t matter how pretty it is, so long as you get the job done. Until this game I had never witnessed a game where both teams were scoreless at the first media timeout. Sure there were 55 total fouls called and 31 total turnovers and long stretches without points, but it was still entertaining. It was a grinder and sometimes those are fun to watch. USC makes its money with its defense and winning ugly should be just fine with them.
Florida’s streak of games with a 3-pointer ends
Florida was 0-17 shooting on 3-pointers against USC. The last time the Gators failed to knock down a trey was in January of 1992. George H.W. Bush was the president. Michael Jackson’s Black or White and All 4 Love by Color Me Badd were the top songs. Gas was about $1.04 per gallon. That streak of 850 games with at least one 3-pointer suffered a painful 40 minute death at Colonial Life Arena. Gators coach Mike White said he was “very surprised” at the way they shot because they entered the game shooting well. He credited the Gamecocks for making life tough for his shooters.
A word from Frank Martin
Forget about what I think, here’s a little of what Frank Martin had to say following the Gamecocks win.
