Will Muschamp isn’t going to apologize for how his team plays, so long as they win. The Gamecocks were out gained 519 to 312 in total offense; they only had 13 first downs to East Carolina’s 34 and had the ball almost 17 minutes less than the Pirates did. So what? They won. How did they win? Forcing turnovers. Specifically, forcing turnovers in the red zone. The Gamecocks took it away from East Carolina four times, three of them inside the five yard line. The Pirates were 2 of 6 in the red zone chances. Meanwhile, USC converted 5 of 6 trips in inside the 20 to secure the 20-15 win over the Pirates.
There’s really no reason for Muschamp to complain about how they win. Three games into the season they are one win away from matching their total from a year ago; they won their home opener for the first time in two years, and they managed to get off to a fast start for the first time this season. Granted they scored 17 in the first quarter and only three the rest of the way, but progress is progress and a win is a win.
