6-7 Aamir Simms of Dyke, VA arrives at Clemson Thursday night for his weekend official visit with the Tigers. This will be his first official visit and others will follow and the Tigers will have the chance to further enhance their position with Simms.
“I feel very passionate for Clemson,” Simms said. “We have a very good relationship, if not a great relationship out of all my schools, if not the greatest relationship. They’ve been on me since last July. Ever since they offered me they’ve never stopped recruiting me. There’s never any dull moments where they stopped texting for a few weeks, or days or months at a time. They always kept in touch with me, between me and coach Brownell and coach Smith. That’s how I really feel about the school, it’s a pretty welcoming feeling.”
As for Brownell’s style of basketball, Simms said the aggressive defensive approach Brownell preaches is something he welcomes.
“I really like how they defend,” he said. Clemson is a really good defensive team. And it’s not mainly the guards scoring. It’s like an all around team where they have some shooters, some defenders and off the dribble scores. They are recruiting right now and trying to turn the program around and doing pretty well. They are not the worst team in the ACC and they are not the best, they are right there in the middle competing with the best of the best in the country. I really like the fight that they have. Whether or not they get to the Big Dance or not, they keep fighting and pushing year after year. If I commit there, I would be joining that program to help push them to that dream.”
Simms also visited Clemson last November for a football game and said he enjoyed that visit very much and he’s looking forward to the return.
“The people there are amazing and made me feel at home,” Simms said. “It’s something I’m really looking forward to to go back there this weekend and get that welcoming feeling like I’m already committed.”
Simms said he will also take official visits to Miami September 24th and one to Pittsburgh on October 8th. He’s also looking at a possible visit to Notre Dame October 15th. And a visit to VCU is possible for September 16th.
Simms said one school has a “tiny lead” but it’s really close between all five schools. He’s not sure when he’ll make his decision saying it could come just before Christmas or right afterward.
Last season Simms averaged 14 points and 9.3 rebounds per game.
