USC’s Frank Martin is looking to go big in his 2015 recruiting class. And in 7-0 center Rozelle Nix of Pensacola State JC, FL, Martin is going very big. Nix arrived at Pensacola last season weighing 389 pounds. He’s now down to 318 pounds.
Martin offered Nix on Monday and the two were on the phone Monday night.
“He said he was really looking for a big to hand business down in the post,” Nix said. “Coach Martin is good friends with my head coach here (Pete Pena). He really does like me and is trying to build up a relationship with me. We talked about a visit. He’s coming to watch one of my practices September 10th.”
Nix is a native of Cincinnati. He went to a prep school in Columbus, GA and almost signed with LSU but he went to the junior college to improve his grades and his skills. He doesn’t know that much about Gamecock basketball but he’s aware of Martin.
“I heard coach Martin can really get on you,” Nix said. “He really cares about you and pushes you. He makes you play hard.”
There is no rush for Nix to make a decision because he doesn’t plan to make one until next spring. He also has offers from Morehead State, Miami of Ohio, Ball State, Bowling Green, Idaho and Loyola Marymount, and he’s getting interest from Tennessee, Pittsburgh, Purdue and Southern Cal.
“It’s too soon,” he said about favorites. “I just want to focus on my school work and my upcoming season.”
Nix said he averaged 6.5 points and 5 rebounds per game last season.
