USC 2014 signee DL Dexter Wideman of Saluda told his coach last week he was going to attend Fork Union Prep, VA this semester and then enroll at USC in January. But Wideman post new plans on his Facebook page over the weekend:
“I will be leaving for school Sunday.. Will be going to prep school at Camden military for 4 months.. Then in January one of my dreams will come true… Playing for South Carolina GameCocks.. God please be with me”
Wideman likely is the most highly touted high school recruit to attend Camden Military though in 2003 USC brought in WR D’von Hill who spent a semester at Camden Military after not qualifying for USC.
Wideman, DL Dante Sawyer and DB Darin Smalls are the three non-enrolling carryovers from the 2014 class for USC. Sawyer is at East Mississippi JC and Smalls will remain home in Summerville and if he gets a qualifying test score will enroll in January. Sawyer hopes to get into USC next summer.
That gives USC 15 initial counters for the 2014 class (including former walkon Carlton Heard) in which their limit was 22. That means 7 of their 2015 commitments can count back on the 2014 class if they enroll early. Subtract those from the 30 commitments they have for 2015 and that leaves them with 23 initial counters for the class which can max out at 25.
The Gamecocks have 16 scholarship seniors and go back to 85 for 2015, so right now they project to be well over the 85 limit after signing day. Of course, they’ll lose some juniors to the NFL after this season and that will open up more scholarships for the class. And some walkons may not have their scholarships renewed.
