There are five undefeated football teams in the state of South Carolina, and none of which might be more surprising than Charleston Southern. It was just two seasons ago when the Buccaneers failed to win a game, yet under first year head coach Jamey Chadwell, CSU is sitting pretty with a 4-0 record.
Charleston Southern started the season with a 32-29 upset at the Citadel, then followed that game with a 23-15 victory over Shorter in their home opener. Road trips to Campbell and Norfolk State followed, which the Bucs also handled by scores of 30-10 and 20-12, respectively.
However, CSU’s toughest test yet will come this weekend as Chadwell’s squad travels to take on FCS power (and soon-to-be FBS member) Appalachian State.
“It’s going to take everything we can to play a really good game to have a chance to be up there in the 4th quarter and compete for a win,” explained Chadwell. “Our guys right now believe that we can go compete with anyone…and that’s what you want from a team.”
“I don’t have to pump up App State. Our guys know who they are. We’re really more concerned if we’re going to improve from last week to this week, and that’s been our focus every week…and that’s why I think we’re 4-0 right now, and trying to get to 5-0.”
Gametime between the Bucs and Mountaineers is set for 3:30 on Saturday.
