The Chad Holbrook era of USC baseball started off with a 4-3 win over Liberty Friday afternoon at Carolina Stadium. The win capped an eventful Opening Day that included pregame festivities honoring former skipper and current AD Ray Tanner and a sold out crowd of over 8,000 fans.
The pregame ceremony for Tanner included retiring his number one jersey complete with a decal on the left field wall and two painted logos on each baseline, the renaming of Williams Street to Ray Tanner Way and the unveiling of a new national championship license plate you can purchase for your car beginning February 19th.
As for the game LB Dantlzer provided a good chunk of the offense with a solo homer in the second and a RBI sacrifice fly in the sixth and sophomore lefty Jordan Montgomery tossed six scoreless innings to led the Gamecock charge. Carolina jumped out to a 4-0 lead but the Flames plated three in the 8th to tighten things. Tyler Webb was able to come in and close the door to make sure the Gamecocks started the season on the right foot.
