For the first time in a decade there was college basketball in the Carolina Coliseum Thursday night. The 19th ranked USC women’s basketball team beat LSU 66-59 before a modest crowd of about 2,000. The arena is showing its age for sure: Both scoreboards didn’t work; the concession stands only had three items and the seats are as worn as ever. But still, it was kind of neat watching a basketball game in the historic building. I still think it would be a cool idea for the women and the men to play one game per season in the cozy old venue. You could invite back legendary players that made special memories in there and make it a special event.
Below are a few pictures from SportsTalk photographer Juan Blas of the sights and sounds of the game. You can also hear Coach Dawn Staley’s postgame comments below. By the way, here is a little trivia for you: the USC women haven’t lost in this building since January 17th 2002, exactly 13 years ago. The last USC team to lose at the Carolina Coliseum? The men, on March 2nd 2002.
