Several in-state players earn preseason baseball honors (AUDIO)

Grayson Greiner

The Louisville Slugger preseason All-America team was released Friday and included several players with connections to in-state schools. No one made the first team, but USC catcher Grayson Greiner landed on the second team. Gamecock pitchers Jordan Montgomery, Colby Holmes and Tyler Webb both made the third team. Clemson second baseman Steve Wilkerson also made the third team. Coastal Carolina’s Aaron Burke made the second team and Chants reliever Ryan Connolly made the third team.

Greiner hit .222 with six homers and 32 RBIs, while also playing excellent defensively as a freshman last season. Montgomery was 6-1 with a 3.62 ERA, Holmes was 7-2 with a 3.05 ERA, and Webb was 6-1 with a 1.56 ERA.

Wilkerson hit .295 for the Tigers last season. He also drove in 31 runs and stole 10 bases.

Burke was 10-5 at Coastal Carolina last season. He had 1.58 ERA. Connolly was 5-2 with a 2.10 ERA.

And one more baseball note, the SEC announced today that it will expand its tournament to 12 teams this year. The top four seeds will earn a one game bye and seeds 5-12 will play a single elimination game on the opening Tuesday. The tournament will be a double-elimination in Wednesday, Thursday, Friday rounds, before returning to do-or-die in the semi-finals and Championship games.
