Late fourth quarter rally sparks Christ Church to title again (AUDIO)

Christ Church scored the game’s final 17 points to defeat Johnsonville 27-18 Friday afternoon for its second straight SCHSL Class 1A-Division 1 state championship.  In the process, the Cavaliers’ extended their winning streak to 25 games.

Johnsonville led 18-10 with 8:28 to play after a 73 yard touchdown run by Tushai Edwards.  But the Cavaliers responded with a 9 play, 54 yard drive capped by a one yard run by quarterback Demetrius Anthony.  Anthony also ran in for the two point conversion to tie the game with 5:15  to play.

Back to back break downs in the kicking game sealed Johnsonville’s fate.  First, the Golden Flashes were forced to punt from their own 25 but the snap was high and recovered in the end zone by Johnsonville for a safety.  On the ensuing kickoff, Quan White went 56 yards for a touchdown, and the extra point clinched the victory.

Christ Church won despite managing just 139 yards to 353 for Johnsonville.  Anthony passed for 160 yards but was sacked four times.  Brison Allison led Johnsonville’s wishbone attack with 205 yards and two touchdowns.  Edwards added 146 yards and one touchdown.

Christ Church finishes the season at 14-0 and Johnsonville at 13-1.
