Swinney says nice things about Lattimore, HBC responds with a shot (AUDIO)

Steve Spurrier agrees with Dabo Swinney’s take on Marcus Lattimore, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t going to take a shot at his upstate rival

Even when they agree on something Steve Spurrier and Dabo Swinney can’t seem to get through it without some controversy.

Swinney was asked about the injury to USC ‘s Marcus Lattimore  during his conference call  Sunday with reporters and had nothing but positive things to say about the Gamecock  running back.

“It took my breath away,” Swinney said. “I was watching it and it just breaks my heart. I mean I just hurt for him and his family and his teammates.  This is a guy that to me represents all the good things that college football should be about.  He’s a guy I know personally, he’s a class young man and so is his family. I know how hard he has worked.

“If there is anybody I would bet on it is Marcus Lattimore. I know it will be a long process but I tell you what, I would put my money on Marcus Lattimore In a heartbeat. When he comes to terms with this, he will do everything he can to come back. My prayers go out to him and his family. I have been heavy-hearted for him. He is a winner in every regard. Hopefully we haven’t seen the last of him from a football standpoint. He has been a great representative for his family and his university. I will lift him up in my prayers.”

AUDIO: Dabo Swinney on Marcus Lattimore [2:48]

During a rally to celebrate Lattimore’s birthday Monday Spurrier noted he agreed with Swinney’s assessment of Lattimore, but not before taking a few digs at Clemson and Swinney.

“A lot of quotes came across from the nation and I read one today from the head coach at our upstate school,” Spurrier told the crowd. You know, that school that used to beat a lot that doesn’t beat us much any more, that one.  Usually when that coach up there talks about South Carolina it’s a bunch h of garbage and a bunch of BS usually. But I have to agree with him on what he said the other day…”

Needless to say the response from the HBC has riled up a lot of Clemson fans. Even some USC fans have questioned whether it was the time or place for taking a shot at Swinney and Clemson.  Just more fuel for the fire when these two teams face off in a few weeks…

  1. What part is wrong Kmac? Spurrier is exactly right. What part of that is not a fact?

  2. Typical Spurless. Class A1 trash. Can’t even get through a ceremony for an injured player without throwing someone under the bus. Thanks for the bulletin board material though!

  3. You necks sure need some bulletin board material Mike. I’m sure 3 total ass kickings in a row did not have your neck team fired up to win. You owe Spurrier a debt of thanks.

  4. The Cocks were 95th in the nation in total offense going into a game against a 1 – 13 team in the SEC. They may have moved up a few spots because they were able to put up 38. Isn’t the Ole Ball Sack the Offensive Cordinator? What a classless act!

  5. That’s weird. It seems Spurrier didn’t say anything last year and yet daybo responded with his “rant”. Kevin, here’s a quarter….

  6. That’s weird. It seems Spurrier didn’t say anything last year and yet daybo responded with his “rant”. Kevin, here’s a quarter….
Basically what you’re saying is daybo only said what he did so SOS would respond in kind? Classless, daybo.

  7. Does anyone remember dabos rant last year. Criticism of the usc. Hmmmmm was that called for? Was he called out? Nope. Yall in the media can be such hypocrites.. so sad but its true

  8. 81 Alumnus says:

Who’s opinion matters less to USC fans, Dabo or K-Mac?

  9. 3 wins in a row…. and still 25 down on the all time record. Still not much of a rivalry. Pitt pretty much embodies everything about South Carolina (I won’t justify it being called USC, that’s in California). Your streak is about over. Giving up 35 to Tennessee with your secondary being bested in every sense of the word. Clemson’s pass attack will destroy your secondary. Your coach is a classless (censor). You can be assured that Spurrier would have had nothing positive to say about a Clemson star if they would have gone down.

  10. Spurrier needs to take a lesson in class from Clemson’s coach. Clemson fans can win and lose gracefully, but South Carolina fans just can’t. They whine about how unfair their losses are and let it go to their heads when they win. Dabo was being extremely gracious with his comment about Lattimore (and many Clemson fans were very supportive) and Spurrier responded inappropriately by being a jerk. This was not the time nor the place for immature digs at his rival.

  11. Cant wait for Spurriers press conf. after Clemson beats his overrated ass on Nov 24. Not the time or place for that when your supposed to be honoring your player. Spurrier always have to have the attention on himself.

  12. always better says:

Spurrier is classless. Typical old man

  13. 81 Alumnus says:

Poor grammar on my part. I meant “Whose opinion matters less to USC fans, Dabo or K-Mac?”

  14. Country Boy says:

“Earlier today, Coach Dabo Swinney said that Marcus was a fine, blah, blah, blah…..”

I guess that’s what you would rather he say. I think he prefaced it with a little jab, but, considering the rivalry and the little bit of history of comments from each coach in regards to the other, I didn’t think it was in bad taste. I think, perhaps people didn’t think Dabo shouldn’t be “set up” like that after trying to make a compliment.
It was Carolina’s ceremony to do with what they wanted, and not yours.

Afterall, it’s not like the classless, cousin dating, sisiter grabing, daughter chasing, touthless, back slapping, rednecks from Pickens did when they booed during a swearing in ceremony for some people would may give their live’s for this country one day.
And, the fact that you made less of a deal with that than what you’re trying to stir up here with this.

  15. we dont owe Spurrier a d*** thing he is a not the A1 man all of the shamecock nation thinks he is Swinney was talking good about one of Spurriers players and he takes a shot at Clemson wrong place wrong time if you ask me. I hope Clemson shoves the ball in his mouth in Nov.

  16. It’s hard to believe Clemson fans don’t give Spurrier some leeway here given the unique / emotional circumstance in which he was speaking. I actually believe he was planning to give the Clemson coach an out / over his unwarranted comments last year(fact) and may have gotten carried away /confused over the pep rally/Marcus b’day. sometimes things don.t come out as planned…ask Romney and Biden. Dabo comments about Marcus were sincere….absolutely , ..his rehearsed comments about USC and Steve Spurrier last year ….ridiculous. I am overjoyed by the response by dabo Clemson and other schools and coaches empathizing for Marcus. That includes first and foremost” the USC”,cock nation, Pastides and coach Spurrier. K.Mac….I think dabo said in his comments that coach Spurrier said it best @Marcus…remember..who could argue that? Phil Kornblut does K.mac make u look good or what? lets all be thankful Marcus will endure in this life…and save “it” for that sat. In Nov., to those who choose the unfortunate injury to Marcus can bring more “health” to this rivalry…not Steve Spurrier has preached since coming to USC.

  17. K.MAC ponder this. Spurrier has always said he tells his players if they can go in the 1st or 2nd round after 3 years they should go(NFL). I could be wrong but I have the distinct impression dabo practically begged cj spiller to stay for his 4th year. That should mean something based on the welfare of cj and marcus recently. See a difference…perhaps that.s because Spurrier has won a Heisman, played and coached at college pro level for the last FIFTY years. Spurrier has his players best interest in mind AND the credibility to prove it and advise them ,he only asks they keep thier word(i.e rice) and he knows thats more important to his influence to a hundred kids a year than anything. J.cook,s.rice,k.simpson,j.joseph
E.cook,w.saunders,alson j., c.geathers,t.gurley, s.gilmore,etc.etc……was coach right or wrong? As a parent whose advice/ influence would you trust? Here’s to “some” Clemson fans hoping you have a coach that will become a good head coach, and wishing your o.line is comparable to the Sec’s U.T. Look forward to hearing from you in Nov! KMAC brings out the best in all of us,huh.

  18. Countryboy says:

Not only begging Spiller, but making it very un-comfortable for Kyle Parker to go ahead and play baseball. Pathetic really. He treats the players as if they owe Climpson something more, but only when HIS rear end is on the line. That’s a fact!!

  19. Spurrier cares about his players? That is rich. Spurrier cares/cared about Lattimore and Wuerffel. Every other player has been run over by the bus tires.

  20. Spurrier probably shouldn’t have said anything about clemson but I guess Clemson Fans are real quick to forget that last year after Clemson lost to USC… Dabo went on a crying bullsh*t rant against USC and Spurrier over something Spurrier didn’t even say. Dabo went ballistic over comments made by a SPORTS ANNOUNCER. So Dabo is just as, if not more, guilty of being white trash. Last year DABO didn’t even ask spurrier if he made those comments, he didn’t see footage or hear audio of spurrier making the comments cause there wasn’t any to see or hear, so White Trash DABO fing assumed spurrier made those comments last year and bashed USC and Spurrier over comments made by a fing sports announcer
