Ray Tanner gets a Gatorade bath after leading USC to a CWS title in 2010
USC baseball coach Ray Tanner is leaving the dugout for an office. As expected, Tanner will replace Eric Hyman as the Gamecocks athletics director. Hyman will leave the post at the end of the month to take over the athletics department at Texas A&M.
USC will introduce Tanner at press conference on Friday.
The move ends Tanner’s 16 year run leading the Gamecock baseball program. He led the team to the College World Series six times and won two national championships during that span. Associate Head Coach Chad Holbrook will take over the program from Tanner. That announcement will come early next week.
Tanner is known for his prowess on the baseball field, but he isn’t without any experience in athletic administration. In addition to his coaching duties at N.C. State, Tanner also had a role in the Wolfpack athletic department. Tanner has also seen an increased role in advising and fundraising at USC over the past several years.
Tanner has always had his eye on becoming an athletic director. Now his wait is over.
