New name emerging at defensive back for Gamecocks (AUDIO)

Jared Shaw continues to impress during spring practice

The Gamecocks returned to the practice fields today, and while the offense still wasn’t quite to the level Steve Spurrier would like it to be, one member of the defensive unit did stand out.

After returning an interception for a touchdown in last Saturday’s scrimmage, Jared Shaw blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown today. Spurrier said that Shaw is currently in the running for a starting spot at cornerback.

Although the defense tallied another turnover with Damario Jeffrey’s interception, Spurrier seemed more pleased with the play of his quarterbacks than he has in recent practices. Dylan Thompson led the offense on a drive and Tanner McEvoy hooked up with Damiere Byrd for a long completion.

The Gamecocks will resume practice next Tuesday.
