USC freshman shortstop Joey Pankake suffered an injury to his left shoulder on a check swing in Tuesday night’s win at The Citadel and Gamecock coach Ray Tanner said Thursday morning his availability for this weekend’s series at Vanderbilt is day to day.
Tanner said Pankake felt better Thursday morning than he did Wednesday. If Pankake can’t play, another freshman, Connor Bright, would start in his place.
Pankake is the Gamecocks’ leading hitter with a .354 average. He’s 12 for 28 (.428) since being moved to the #2 spot in the batting order during the Kentucky series.
Tanner said Michael Roth will make his usual Friday night start. Saturday’s starter is to be determined. Matt Price could get the call if he’s not used in a long stint in relief Friday night. Colby Holmes will start Sunday.
