Frank Martin's bank account is about to get a lot bigger
Frank Martin has a six year contract with USC that makes him the fourth highest paid coach in the SEC. Only Kentucky’s John Calipari, Florida’s Billy Donavan and Arkansas’ Mike Anderson make more.
The contract runs through March 31, 2018 and has a base salary of $300,000 dollars. It is bolstered further by media and supplemental compensation. Martin will make 1.9 million dollars in year one, $2 million in his second year, $2.1 in year three and 2.2 million over the final two years.
Martin made about 1.1 million plus incentives at Kansas State last year.
There is a lot of incentive based compensation built into Martin’s new contract. For example, if he wins nine or more SEC games next season he will receive $15,000. If he wins 10 or more in year two he will receive the same amount. If he wins 12 or more league games in years 3-6 of the contract he will receive $15,000.
Martin will get $75,000 if he wins the SEC regular season title, $50,000 if he wins the tournament and $100,000 if he wins both. He also gets $25,000 for making the NCAA Tournament, $50,000 for advancing to the Sweet 16, $100,000 for the Elite Eight, $200,000 for a Final Four, and $400,000 for a national title.
Martin also gets a $25,000 bonus for SEC Coach of the Year or National Coach of the Year honors. He gets $15,000 for AP, Naismith, Hank Iba or NABC Coach of the Year honors.
Martin also receives bonuses up to $90,000 dollars for strong NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) numbers. And it will be lucrative for him to help draw big crowds to Colonial Life Arena. He gets $50,000 if the season ticket sales increase by more than 1,000 from the previous season. He also gets $15,000 if there are four or more home games with turnstile attendance greater than 16,000 fans.
As for the buyout, should Martin terminate his contract in year one, it’s a four million dollar buyout. It drops to three million in year two, $1.5 million in year three,$ 800,000 in year four and half a million over the final two years.
Also, USC is not obligated to pay more than one million dollars to buy out Martin’s contract.
USC is also giving Martin $150,000 as a relocation payment, access to two cars, a country club membership, a suite at CLA, 14 tickets to each home game along with 12 tickets to SEC and NCAA Tournament games
