Liberty redshirt-junior quarterback Mike Brown (Charlottesville, Va.) and Gardner-Webb senior linebacker Marty Patterson (Mt. Airy, Ga.) have been voted the Big South Conference’s 2010 Preseason Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, respectively, by the League’s head football coaches and media panel, it was announced today at the 2010 Big South Football Media Day Kickoff Luncheon at the Renaissance Charlotte Suites Hotel in Charlotte, N.C.
Brown, who received nine first-place votes and 21 total points, was the 2009 Big South Offensive Player of the Year – becoming the first sophomore in Big South history to win the award. He was named to College Sporting News’ Fabulous 50 All-America team, and started all 11 games a year ago with 10 at wide receiver and one at quarterback. Brown was second in the Big South with 11 touchdowns scored last season (nine rushing and two receiving), as well as second in the League with 60 receptions and third with 698 receiving yards. He also was third in the Conference in all-purpose yards per game (128.8) and second in all-purpose yards per game in Big South contests (119.7). He also rushed for 442 yards on 77 carries (5.7 average) and notched three multi-touchdown games in 2009.
A First-team VaSID All-State honoree, Brown was responsible for 15 total touchdowns as a running back, wide receiver and quarterback, and scored on an 80-yard pass play at Gardner-Webb and a 70-yard rush at Stony Brook. He posted the two highest single-game receiving totals in the Big South last year – 157 at West Virginia and 198 against Gardner-Webb, and ranked 37th nationally in receptions per game with 5.45. Brown led Liberty to a road victory in his only start at quarterback, passing for 242 yards (29-of-36) and a touchdown against Lafayette, earning National Player of the Year accolades from The Sports Network and College Sporting News for his performance.
Patterson, who has already been named a 2010 preseason All-American by Phil Steele’s College Football Preview and The Sports Network, received 13 of 15 first-place votes and 28 points to claim the defensive honor. Tabbed the 2010 Big South Defensive Player of the Year by Lindy’s College Football Magazine, Patterson stepped in during an injury-plagued 2009 season for the GWU linebacker corps and posted career-best totals with 110 tackles and 14.0 tackles-for-loss to lead the Big South. He had 60 percent of his tackles in Conference games, including a season-high 15 stops vs. Liberty on Nov. 14. Patterson also recorded 15 tackles at Buffalo on Oct. 10 and had 14 stops and two TFL vs. Stony Brook on Oct. 31.
A two-time All-Big South selection, Patterson helped the Gardner-Webb defense hold four opponents to less than 100 yards rushing in 2009 en route to the League’s top rushing defense. He recorded nine tackles and a goal line interception at Presbyterian College in last year’s season finale, and also had a touchdown-saving fumble recovery at Coastal Carolina on Nov. 7. Against the Chanticleers, Patterson had 12 tackles, one tackle-for-loss and a forced fumble as well. He averaged 11.0 tackles per game in League play, and earned Big South Defensive Player of the Week honors for his efforts in GWU’s win at Western Carolina on Sept. 12. Patterson needs 79 tackles to join the Big South’s 300-tackle club.
Stony Brook running back Edwin Gowins finished second in the offensive voting with 13 points (three first-place votes), while Charleston Southern wide receiver Gerald Stevenson was third with eight points (two first-place votes). On defense, Charleston Southern defensive lineman Joel Walton was second to Patterson with 12 points (two first-place votes), while Liberty defensive back Brent Vinson was third with five points.
Brown and Patterson were also voted to the preseason All-Conference team. The preseason team is comprised of 12 offensive players, 12 defensive players and five special teams selections, plus any ties. Liberty and Gardner-Webb tied for the most with eight players each on the preseason squad, followed by Charleston Southern (5), Coastal Carolina (4), Stony Brook (2) and VMI (2).
