Apparently nobody wants the Tennessee job. Who can blame them. Would you want to follow the legendary Lane Kiffin? It is turning into an absolute debacle in Knoxville right now with the latest news that David Cutcliffe has informed the Vols that he is going to stay at Duke. Are you kidding me? He would rather coach at ACC doormat Duke than Tennessee? The “Mighty Vols”, who just a couple of years ago were playing in the SEC title game now can’t even lure a coach away from Duke.
“After much thought and consideration, Karen and I reached the decision that Duke is the place for our family,” Cutcliffe said in a statement released through the university, adding “we have the best coaching staff in the country, and are convinced that we will continue to build a successful football program that both the Duke and Durham communities will be proud of.”
Cutcliffe spent 17 seasons as an assistant at Tennessee. He also had a stop as the head coach at Ole Miss . He coached both Peyton and Eli Manning and by all accounts is a fabulous head coach. Winning nine games in two years at Duke proves that he is pretty darn good.
Tennessee athletic director Mike Hamilton (who I think should be fired for hiring Kiffin in the first place) is scrambling big time now. He is being turned down right and left. It looks like he’s getting pretty low on his list when names like Louisiana Tech coach Derek Dooley and Temple’s Al Golden are being mentioned as potential candidates.
Phil Fulmer isn’t looking so bad now, is he? Don’t say I didn’t warn you. We said time and time again that Kiffin was going to ruin the Vols program and he came through in record time (14 shrot months). Nice work Kiffy.
The over-under on him destroying Southern Cal is three years. I am taking the under.
